Edgar Lyle Whitaker passed peacefully with family by his side on Saturday September 26th, 2015. Lyle is survived by his wife Emma Mae “Rusty” Whitaker, his daughter Katie Stratis, his daughter in law Pamela Milam, his sons in law Tedd Stratis and Michael Milam, his grandchildren Jennifer Whitaker, Amanda Whitaker and Alexander Whitaker Stratis, and his great grandson William Michael Whitaker.
Born in 1925 and raised in the farm land surrounding Greenwood, Indiana, Lyle went on to serve as a sergeant in the medical corps, European Theater, World War II, to open and do good business in his own barbershop in the Indianapolis Greyhound bus terminal for over 20 years, and to spend the beginning of his retirement aiding the mentally ill at Valle Vista Hospital. A man who was never happier than when he had a project, Lyle’s interests ranged from carpentry to writing to landscaping to reading and much more. He was much loved and will be sorely missed.
A graveside service will be held for Lyle in the Greenwood Cemetery at 11am on Tuesday September 29th, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Lyle by making a donation to NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org) or The National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org).
