Edith, affectionately known as EE to many, was a private and quiet person, but also was very witty and fun. She was known to be fearless and certainly independent. She could be strong-willed and stubborn at times yet was also very thoughtful of others and had a compassionate heart. Edith was a complex person with many different traits and attributes but those are what made her, her and undoubtedly helped her deal with life’s many challenges.
Edith graduated high school in 1986 and not too long after, she started working at State Farm and continued to do so for the next 25 years. During that time, she and her children had moved from Terre Haute to Indianapolis where she built a great life while demonstrating resilience and adaptability. In the past 10 years, Edith has worked for senior living facilities as a concierge and an office building manager, where she was a dedicated worker. Edith was very tenderhearted and selfless which is why she enjoyed working with the senior community. She would go out of her way to make her residents feel special, even if that meant she had to reach into her own pocket. Her relationship with her residents speaks volumes about her character but nothing compares to the loving, devoted mother that she was.
Her role as a mother is lovingly emphasized, sharing qualities of unconditional love, strength, and generosity that extended beyond her immediate family to encompass a wide network of loved ones. She dedicated her life to raising her children and she did not hesitate to sacrifice her needs and wants to provide for her children. These traits were shown even more with her grandchildren that meant the world to her. She enjoyed doing science projects with the grandchildren and having game nights. She would cook with the grandchildren and take her time with them in the kitchen. She enjoyed cooking for everyone, ensuring everyone had a plate before making her own. She was well known for her meals, especially breakfast dishes. The last 10 years her hobby was gardening, growing her own vegetables and fruits. This is a passion she enjoyed sharing with her grandchildren. Edith provided her children and grandchildren with all of the love, comfort, hospitality, humor and stability a family could ask for and in return was loved very much.
Edith is survived by her children, Miles (Mary) Flowers, and Monteka Pegues; her grandchildren, Jaylen Ellingwood, Jamiri Flowers, Nicholas Pegues, and Justice Flowers; her siblings, James (Won) Flowers, Karen Smith, Kevin (Cheryl) Flowers, Donna (Lawrence) Rice, and Randy Flowers; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; James and Mary Flowers; and her sisters, Kathy Sandifer, and Damita Ellington.
Cremation services have been held privately. A celebration of Edith’s life (viewing only) will be held at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary, 1307 North Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46219, on Thursday, March 21st from 1-4pm.
