Obituary of Edward John Gaughan
Edward John Gaughan, 87, beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2021. Ed was born December 6, 1933, in Indianapolis to Edward and Rose Schaedel Gaughan. He was a 1951 graduate of Cathedral High School and went on to Butler University, where he played basketball for Tony Hinkle. He married Margaret L. Potter in Indianapolis on September 5, 1953, a marriage that lasted 60 years. Their marriage was blessed with four children who survive. Beth Lyons (John); Steve (Dianne); Jeff (Shirley); and Michael Gaughan. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Mark Lyons (Erin); Alex Lyons (Jenn); Laura Lyons; Nick (Lexi) Gaughan, Scott Gaughan and Kelly Gaughan; four great-grandchildren, Ella, Abby and Max Lyons and Gunner Prescott Gaughan. Two brothers, Dennis and Tony Gaughan also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marge, and brothers Kevin and David. With his entrepreneurial spirit, Ed started and owned a medical billing company, Med-Cor Data for over twenty years. He began his career working for US Envelope, Burroughs, and SYCOR. Ed loved staying active and enjoyed meeting new people so he continued working in his retirement years for United Courier. Ed was active in CYO sports and coached many of his sons’ teams. He was a member of Heather Hills/Maple Creek Country Club for over 45 years. He was a loyal fan of Butler Basketball, the Pacers and Indianapolis Colts. He loved fantasy football, fishing, crossword and sudoku puzzles, poker games, storytelling, and time on the golf course. Ed had a wide circle of friends who he enjoyed spending time with but loved being with his family most of all. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Indianapolis on Thursday, November 4 at 11:00. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary from 4:00 – 7:00. Burial will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
