Obituary of Elma L. Myers
Elma L. Myers was born June 5, 1932 in Byhalia, Mississippi; she was 7 of 13 children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Milam. Elma professed her love for and dedication to Christ at an early age by being baptized at her family church, Mt. Gilliam Baptist Church in Byhalia, Mississippi. This is also where she attended grade school as Mt. Gilliam Elementary was attached to the church. After moving to Indianapolis in 1951, she became an ardent member of Eastside Baptist Church. Elma was reared to always lend a helping hand and take care of family when and however needed. This included taking an annual, and sometimes biannual, pilgrimage to Mississippi to visit and assist her parents and siblings. She was well known and highly revered for her cooking including her stacked cakes. She hosted Sunday dinners for her family almost every week and although she might fuss, you knew she loved you! Elma was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to the late Walter H. Myers on April 1, 1950. To that union three children were born, Erma L. Sherrod, George R. Myers (deceased) and Vincent E. Myers. They were happily married until his death. When she grew tired, she found relief in her faith in the Heavenly Father. On May 5, 2021 in the early morning hours the gates of Heaven swung open and received her home. Many entered in Heaven’s gates before her. She is welcomed with widespread arms by her parents, grandparents, husband, son, two brothers and eight sisters. Elma leaves to cherish her memory her dutiful and devoted daughter, Erma Sherrod, her stoic son, Vincent Myers; four grandsons, Cary Montgomery, Da’Ron Myers, Antwan Myers (Jenice), and Malcolm Myers (Monica), and one granddaughter, Candace Sabino (Derek); two sisters, MaeElla Thompson and Marie Hughes and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She had a beautiful smile, infectious spirit and will be sorely missed.
