Erby began his education at Little Flower Catholic School and graduated from Cathedral High School. After high school, he attended Indiana University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business. Following college, Erby enlisted in the US Army and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. While serving, he was a championship coach for military basketball and football teams. He had the privilege of coaching future professional football players.
His love for sports did not stop there. IU teams were his favorite. He had encyclopedic knowledge of sports statistics and could readily provide historic information about high school through professional teams. His command of sports knowledge helped him win many parlay bets. Erby liked to talk about his winnings.
Family dinners combined some of Erby’s favorite things: good food, tv sports, and lively conversations. Erby regularly provided Klemm’s or Buck’s meat to the dinner table. He was a man of strong opinions and when he didn’t agree with an opinion, he would say “You might be right, but I’m not wrong”.
He had a soft spot for children and a quiet generosity that extended to them, immediate family, and many others.
He was a proud Iron Worker for decades and rose to the position of Financial Secretary-Treasurer for Iron Workers Local Union #22 until his retirement.
