

Evelyn Faye Yates AKA Sam was born February 14, 1939 in Hazel, Kentucky. She was the lovely daughter of Neron Thorpe and Georgia Bennett (deceased). Sam was raised in Hazel, Kentucky prior to moving to Indianapolis, Indiana. Sam graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sam had and astonishing career working at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Her longevity exceeded 40 years of service in many different roles. She served as Salad Dessert Supervisor, Purchase Manager, Team Lead and Production Manager.
Sam gave her life to the Lord and Savior at a young age. Sam was a long-time member of Eastern Star Church. As a member she served in the Senior Saint Ministry, Vacation Bible School, Women of the Word and attended bible study consistently.
Sam loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed walking, traveling, playing cards, dancing and helping other people and never wanted anything in return.
On Sunday January 11, 2026 Sam departed this life on earth at the age of 86 to be with the Lord. Sam was preceded in death by her one sister Willie Mae Thorpe Harris, and her son-in-law John Murry Sr.
Sam lived an extraordinary life and leaves to honor her legacy one daughter Judy Murry, one daughter (not by birth) Landa Burnett, one brother Clifton J. Bennett (Inelle), and Sister Tonya Bennett. Two grandsons John W. Murry II, Tyrone Burnett Jr. (not by birth) and one great granddaughter Zy-Niyah, nephews Avery (Tammy) Hudson, Yon Price, Jamey (Courtney) Jackson, niece Kathleen, and her stepchildren.
A visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home, located at 700 W 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46218, on January 20, 2026, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life will take place at the same venue at 11:00AM.
