Obituary of George Kelly Hedgeman
George Kelly Hedgeman, 65 of Indianapolis passed away on January 29th in Indianapolis, Indiana. George was born in Saint Louis Missouri to Bernice Herron and James Hedgeman. He graduated from Beaumont High School in Saint Louis, Missouri. After leaving high school, George attended Wilberforce University. While there, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha. He received an Associate’s degree in Community Corrections from Sinclair Community College; a Bachelor’s degree in education from Dayton University (Cum Laude); an Associate’s degree in Mortuary Science from Cincinnati Mortuary College; and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Payne Theological Seminary. He worked as a correctional officer for the Dayton Juvenile Detention Center. He began pastoring at the age of nineteen his first charge was in Coffeyville, Kansas. Ater moving to Ohio, he pastored Anderson Chapel A.M.E. church in Madisonville, Ohio; Bethel A.M.E. church in Lebanon, Ohio and St. Paul A.M.E. church in Milford, Ohio. George served as an embalmer and funeral director for The George H. Colin Mortuary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also taught social studies at Gamble Middle School from 1985 until he moved to Indianapolis in 1997. On December 29, 1992, he married the love of his life, Marsha Owens. He retired on December 31, 2020 after twenty-three years of service from Core Civic Marion County Jail II. In 2018 he was awarded “Employee of the Year,” one of his most prized possessions. He was preceded in death by his father, James Hedgeman; his mother, Bernice Herron; grandmother, Margia Kelly Herron; and his only uncle, George Herron. George is survived by his spouse, Marsha Hedgeman; sister-in-law, Nila Anderson (Ron) Indianapolis, Indiana; Brothers-in-law, Richard Owens (Debra) Slidell, Louisiana and William Owens (Anita) Terre Haute, Indiana. Two Aunts (by marriage) Helen Van Cleave, Indianapolis and Flossie Davis, Cleveland, Ohio and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends (best friend- Larry “Yarellllllllll”) Visitation with the family will be 12:00 P.M. Saturday, February 13, at New Wineskin Ministries. Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 P.M. at New Wineskin Ministries, 4501 W. 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana with Pastor Mark V.
