

95 of Indianapolis, formerly of Chicago departed this life on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Gil was born September 10, 1929 in Chicago to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Gerten) Opferman. He grew up and attended schools on the south side of Chicago and was a graduate of St. Augustine High School.
Gil then proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He had worked his entire life for Illinois Central Railroad in administration. Later in his retirement, Gil was an honored guest of Honor Flight Chicago.
Gil was a kind and gentle soul who had never met a stranger. He devoted his life to his faith and family and was so very proud of his children and grandchildren. He had traveled the world (most memorable were Greece and Africa), and all 50 states, and was appreciative to have learned about the different cultures he had experienced. Gil loved all things outdoors. He loved playing golf, tennis, running, cycling (often to Mass) and was an accomplished gardener. He was a Troop Master for Boy Scouts of America #347 and supported his family in all of their endeavors. He rarely passed on a game of Gin Rummy or Pinochle and was a familiar face at the softball fields and bowling alley. He loved square dancing and traveled often to events where he reunited with old friends.
Gil was a long standing member and dedicated volunteer at Incarnation Catholic Church in Palos Heights, IL where he was also a member of St. Theodore Guerin Council 14057 Knights of Columbus. Additionally, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and a lifelong member of the Condors Social Club. Later, he was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Indianapolis.
Gil was preceded in death by his dear siblings, Joseph, John, Dolores and Katherine.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Marcella Rose “Marcy” Opferman; devoted children, Gil (Ann) Opferman, Br. Tim Opferman, C.M., Jan (Tom) Williams and Tom (Julia) Opferman; 10 grateful grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; dear sister, Jackie (Arnie) Rucinski; several nieces and nephews and a host of old dear friends.
A memorial visitation for Gil will begin at 10:00am on Wednesday, March 12th at St. Pius X Catholic Church (7200 Sarto Drive, Indianapolis, IN 26240) followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Inurnment follows at Crown Hill National Cemetery Annex (725 W 42nd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208).
Memorial contributions are suggested in Gil’s name to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul.
