Born on August 4, 1923, in Kinloch, Missouri, Gladys Jackson was the third of six children born to Earley and Cecelia Wilson. She received her education in St. Louis and graduated from Douglass High School, named in honor of the abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
At the time of her graduation, the world was at war. With World War II raging overseas, Gladys stepped up in her own quiet yet powerful way, joining the workforce in a factory that produced bullets for the war effort. It was her way of serving, and it exemplified the courage and determination that would define her life.
Within two years of the war’s end, Gladys moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she met and married the love of her life, Julian "Doug" Jackson. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, lasting 64 beautiful years.
Gladys had a deep and abiding love for God. She prayed faithfully for others, without ceasing, and devoted time each day to reading her scriptures. In 1956, she and Doug became devoted members of Mount Paran Baptist Church, where she actively participated in Sunday School and the Baptist Training Union (BTU). One of her most joyful activities was shopping for nursing home residents during the Christmas season, a reflection of her generous and caring spirit.
In addition to being a devoted wife and committed church member, Gladys worked for many years as an inspector at RCA, where she served with great dedication before retiring.
Following Doug’s passing, Gladys was encouraged by her brother Ulysses, who visited from Cleveland, to take up walking. During his visits to Indianapolis, the two made it a daily routine to walk together at Northwestway Park. At the time, Gladys was nearly 90 years old and Ulysses in his mid-80s—yet they faithfully walked three miles a day, inspiring many with their dedication.
As she became a regular presence at the park, Gladys formed friendships with fellow walkers, and what began as a simple exercise routine blossomed into a vibrant walking community. These friendships often extended beyond the park, reflecting the warmth and kindness she so naturally shared.
Anyone who knew Gladys knew how much she loved to cook. Many mornings, she would finish her walk early, rush home, and prepare enough food to feed nearly everyone at the park. Before long, the group of walkers would find themselves gathered at her house, enjoying a delicious, homemade breakfast. Her generous heart and welcoming hospitality made her more than just a walking buddy—she became a cherished friend to many.
Around this time, Gladys also began attending Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. She soon became an official member and deeply treasured the worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth she found there.
At the age of 93, Gladys made the courageous decision to sell her beloved home of 55 years and purchase a new home at Robin Run Village Senior Living. Even there, she continued to open her doors with love, welcoming family and friends with the same warmth and generosity that had always defined her.
Gladys held a profound love for her siblings—Earley Jr., Rosa Roberts, Ulysses Wilson, Alfonzo Wilson, and Dorothy Mae Johnson—all of whom preceded her in death. Through them, she was blessed with devoted nieces and nephews: Steve, Dianna, and Nanette (children of Rosa); Rodney and Bernard (sons of Alfonzo); Jerry, Ginger, and Angela (daughters of Ulysses); and Arthur and Charles (sons of Dorothy Mae).
She also shared loving bonds with her nephews from Doug’s family: Steven Blackwell, Dennis Jackson, Ronald Jackson, Robert Earl Jackson, Mark Jackson, Glynis Morris, and Bryan Thomas. In addition to these beloved nieces and nephews, Gladys leaves behind her cherished goddaughter, Charlene C. Duline; a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and dear friends; as well as the treasured adopted families—the Walker, Emeli, Burress, Offett, and Taylor families—who held a special place in her heart and life.
She lived with grace, loved deeply, and leaves behind a life beautifully remembered.
A visitation for Gladys will be held Friday, July 11, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 5111 W 62nd St, Indianapolis, IN 46268, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM.
