Gordon D. Wishard Sr.

Gordon D. Wishard, Sr., 81, died September 3rd, 2026, in Indianapolis following a brief illness. His parents were Carolyn Davis Wishard and William Niles Wishard, Jr., MD. He was a graduate of the Park School for Boys in Indianapolis and Williams College in Williamstown, MA. He received his JD from the Indiana School of Law in Bloomington, IN, in 1969 and joined the United States Army and served in West Germany as Adjutant of a NATO missile battalion.

Wishard returned from the service to join the Indianapolis law firm Smith Morgan & Ryan, practicing there until 1989 when he joined Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan. His professional career extended over 40 years and emphasized estate planning and related tax law. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and served on the Indiana Probate Code Study Commission. He loved his practice and his associations with his clients and colleagues in the law, particularly the young associates he had a hand in training.

Wishard served as president of many local clubs and organizations: among them are Woodstock Club, Indianapolis Contemporary Club, University Club, and Circle City Duck Club. He was a trustee of the University of Indianapolis, a director of Crown Hill Cemetery and the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation. He served the Methodist Health Foundation Inc, in support of Methodist Hospital for 24 years as a board member and as board chair for ten of those years. He loved Indianapolis and appreciated these and other appointments that enabled him to participate in its communities.

Wishard was devoted to his surviving wife of 34 years, Anne Emison Wishard. He is also survived by his children, Claire Wishard Hoppenworth (Mitchell) and Gordon D. Wishard, Jr., (Michele), sister Susan Wishard Poston (David), grandchildren Emily and Eli Hoppenworth, Watson Wishard and Cousin Gerald Hallett (Kathy). He was predeceased by brother, William Niles Wishard, III.
