HELEN completed her early education in West Virginia. Her family later moved to Indianapolis, where she graduated from Crispus Attucks High School.
On November 26, 1951, HELEN was united in Holy Matrimony to Benjamin Boone. They remained married and raised a family together for 25 years.
Helen accepted Christ at an early age and as an adult she and Ben joined Martindale Church of Christ, where she was a member for over 50 years. While there, she was a member of the choir and served as a Deaconess until she reached Emeritus status.
HELEN worked in Housekeeping at Fort Benjamin Harrison for 37 years until she retired in 1991.
HELEN had a zest for life and loved to have fun. She loved to dance and sing and listen to music. She was partial to the blues and B.B. King was one of her favorites. A few of her hobbies included fishing, bowling, playing Bingo and card games and trips to the casino. After retiring, she also enjoyed watching her daytime soap operas (The Young & The Restless) and her favorite game shows, such as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
HELEN loved spending time with her family and friends. She was blessed to be a blessing to others and it showed in the way she took care of her family and anyone in need, when she could. She was affectionately known as “Mama Boone” around her neighborhood and to friends of the family. “Mama’s House” was the place to be on Sundays after church and most holidays. Before her health failed, you could often find her in the kitchen singing or humming and cooking. There, you could also be sure to find some of the best home-cooked meals. Some of her most requested dishes were her Chili, Cornbread Dressing or her delicious Seafood Macaroni salad. Her Sweet Potato Pies and Pineapple Upside-Down Cake were always a hit.
In the early morning hours of Friday, April 08, 2022 at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 9 days, the Lord called Helen home. She was received by her parents, her husband, and her son Benjamin Eugene Boone (Sonny). She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Freddie Lee Webber, Clarence Starks, Jr and Cora Lee Kirk and son-in-law, Michael Griffin, Sr. She fought the good fight and never lost her faith. Even as her mind and body were failing her, she would quote Psalms 23 and sing of the goodness of the Lord.
HELEN leaves to cherish her memory her children, Susie Griffin, Donna Mack, Phillip Boone, Carmen Brown (Cedric) and her 24/7 caregivers, Kimberly Boone and Marcia Flaunders. Helen had 16 grandchildren - Ronald Starks, Michael Griffin, Jr, Sonja Tooson, Shawnika Griffin, Arkema Griffin, Maurice Griffin, Yaviera Williams, Daryl Boone, Shonnea (Sultan) Abdullah, Donikea Flaunders, James Don Flaunders, Courtney (Chauncey) Brown, Christian Smith, Cameron Brown, Raimond Boone and Kyree Boone, 33 great- grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, including her sons-in-love, James Flaunders, Jr and Leonard Rhem.
