

Helen C. Whitelowe, 86, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Helen was born May 16, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late James Green and Elizabeth Maddox Green. Helen was a graduate of Downington Industrial and Agricultural School in Downington, PA; and attended Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, and Indiana Central University in Indianapolis. She also studied at Oriel College at Oxford England.
Helen worked in civil service at HUD and Ft. Benjamin Harrison Finance Center, where she retired. A pioneer in the Indianapolis theatre and arts community, Helen was an award winning actress who appeared locally in plays, television, radio, and commercials; and nationally in movies and commercials. She was the founder and director of Soul People Repertory Company, one of the first African American theatre companies in Indianapolis, and was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the proclamation of Helen Whitelowe Day in the city of Indianapolis in June 1983.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; son Tyrone �"Butch†Courtney; and husband, William �"Billy†Whitelowe.
