

He professed his hope in Christ at an early age at Metropolitan Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. William Sweatt.
Rickey received his elementary education at Indianapolis Public Schools #41 and #63. He was an exceptional child academically and skipped the 4th grade and transferred to accelerated school #75. Ricky played trumpet in the marching band and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1968. Later he attended Indiana University - Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) where he played on the first assembled intramural basketball team and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Ricky was also a founding Charter member of the Sigma Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Rickey was employed at Link-Belt as a crane operator prior to being appointed to the Indianapolis Police Department on July 7, 1975. On May 8, 1976 he and Cheryl Talley married. They would then divorce. He later married Diane Pillow on December 11, 1987, and they would then divorce in 2011. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Hogan Black, Jr. retired on September 3, 2002. In the personnel file of Retired Lieutenant Black were numerous letters of recognition and commendation. Four of which came from former Chief Gallagher accompanied with letters from Chief Michael Zunk, Detective Robert Flack and Detective Timothy Knight highlighting his exemplary service.
Apart from being a pillar in his community, Hogan enjoyed assembling model cars, listening to music and attending live performances, dancing, playing cards, playing basketball, studying history and playing LEGOs with his grandchildren. Affectionately dubbed the '6th' Temptation, Hogan enjoyed using music to connect with his family and friends.
Rickey took his wings on Sunday morning, December 15, 2019, with his "Honey" by his side. He was able to give the gift of life to four people (from his eye tissue) through Indiana Donor Network. "It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." - Mother Teresa
Rickey was preceded in death by his parents Geraldine (Hudson) and Hogan H. Black Sr., his brother Richard Brady, and his grandson Ledreius Black.
He leaves to cherish his memory of his laughter and love are his sister Deborah A. Black-Ford (Alfred); brother, Keith Webb; daughters; Nicole Black, Qiana Black-Miller, Gerri Black, and son; Hogan H. Black III (Summer); nephew, John W. Barnett Sr., grandchildren; Quiana, Mia, Kylah, Elijah, Amiyah, Elisha, Morgan, Isaiah, Kashton, and Hudson; great grandchildren; Nakoah, Mark, and Jacob; his "Honey" - Joyce Lockridge and a host of friends and family, who have shown an abundance of love and support over the years.
