

Al was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Margie Ellen (Slinkard) Walker. Margie passed June 12, 2015
Al was born November 27, 1924 to J. Atla and Lucy (Sells) Walker. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1941 and attended Indiana University and the FBI Academy.
After a short stint as a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy, Al was accepted to the Indiana State Police Academy in 1952. One of his early assignments with the State Police was an aide to Indiana’s 39th Governor, George N. Craig. Al remained close friends with Gov. Craig until Craig’s death in 1992.
In 1956 Al was awarded the state’s highest honor, The Sagamore of the Wabash. Al rose through the ranks in the department, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1979.
Al experienced some exceptional details while on the State Police. The Beatles,Bob Hope, Jim Nabors, and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Al became close friends with Ernie Ford that lasted until Ernie’s death in 1991. The Walker Family still has contact with Ernie’s only living son, Buck Ford. Al was bodyguard for Vice President and President nominee Richard M.Nixon and later was bodyguard for Senator Robert F. Kennedy in his run for President in 1968.
Al was shot at point blank range only to have the revolver misfire and the 2 criminals decided not to kill him and tied him to a tree in a wooded area. Al later caught the same criminal at a stake out on a bank robbery in Irvington; this criminal later would not talk to any police officer without the presence of Al, as he had grown to trust him to be treated fairly. This criminal later turned his life around and gave credit to Al for giving him another chance in life.
In retirement, Al enjoyed traveling with his loving wife, family and friends. His family rejoices knowing that he lived a full life.
Survivors include, a daughter, Lynn A. Meyer (Joe), son’s Dan M. Walker and Larry J. Walker (Linda), grandchildren, Sonda L. Sorg (Jeff), Dana J. Willing (Joe) and Joseph A. Meyer, and 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Marcedes Joslin brothers, John Walker, Paul Walker, Ralph Walker(deceased)
Service will be held at Indian Creek Christian Church located at 6430 S. Franklin Road, Indpls, IN 46259 on October 31st. Senior Pastor, Gary Johnson will be presiding. Visitation 9:00-11:00. Service at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Indiana State Police Memorial Fund, 8660 E. 21st St. Indpls, IN 46219
