James Nelson cowherd

James Nelson “Sonny” Cowherd was born May 15, 1936 in Greensburg, KY. He was born from the union of James W. Cowherd and Nannie J. Shively Cowherd. James was the second oldest of 11 siblings. James was a trustee at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church for many years where he loved serving the Lord. James served in the United States Army where his received an honorably discharged from in 1965. James worked for Bridgeport Brass for 36 years retiring in 1997. James attended Greensburg Grade School until 1949 when he moved to Indianapolis, IN where he then attended School 42. He then attended Shortridge High School and then graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. James enjoyed sitting outside, working in the yard cutting grass, planting flowers and working in the garden. He like playing cards but most of all he loved fishing. He was also a very good cook. James was married in 1967 to Barbara Warner and from this union he had one son. James L. Cowherd. James Nelson “Sonny” Cowherd was united in marriage to Mildred Golden Grace February 14, 2009 on Valentine’s Day. They shared a love like no other, enjoying one another until he went home to glory. James Nelson Cowherd departed this life peacefully on Monday July 25, 2016. He was preceded in death by his bothers, Wayne Cowherd and Robert Cowherd; sisters Rebecca Williams and Shirley Hambrite. James leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife Mildred Cowherd; son, James L. Cowherd; stepsons, George Jones, Willis W. Grace; stepdaughter, Deborah C. Bailey; brothers, William (Karen), Lawrence, Jerry, Neil Cowherd; sisters, Martha Cowherd and Connie Cowherd; grandson, James A. Cowherd; special cousin, Katherine Hurston; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
