On February 14, 1960, James married Clarice Owen in Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in devotion, hard work, and family.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his cherished wife, Clarice; his sister Louise Howard and brother Oliver Landers; his daughter, Jewell Imogene Landers; and his great‑grandson, Tayshaun La´Mar Landers. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
A dedicated and hardworking man, James spent many faithful years at Stokely‑Van Camp before retiring. Even then, his strong work ethic and servant’s heart led him back into the workforce, joining Methodist Hospital in the housekeeping department. There, he carried himself with the same quiet diligence, humility, and steady commitment that marked every chapter of his life.
James was a devoted and longstanding member of Mount Helm Baptist Church, having united with the congregation in 1950. In his later years, he followed his son Carson to Puritan Missionary Baptist Church, where he joyfully became a member in 2006. Throughout his life of faith, James served faithfully on the Usher Board of both churches, offering his warm presence, steady hands, and quiet dignity to all who entered the Lord’s house.
He took great pride in teaching his sons the skill of driving—both locally and across long distances—and imparted in them a steadfast work ethic, personal responsibility, and a deep devotion to family. The values he instilled continue to shape the lives of those who follow after him.
James is survived by his sons: Edward (Rosalind) Landers of Seguin, TX; L. Carson (Kimberly) Landers; and his fraternal sons, Walter Lewis and Steve Roberts.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Marquita Landers of Murfreesboro, TN; Edward Landers II of Converse, TX; Jené (Desmond) Fahie of San Marcos, TX; Patrick Robinson II of Austin, TX; Terry Howell II and Tamika Howell of Indianapolis, IN. Great‑grandchildren Shayla Lane and Ke’Moni Murray of Murfreesboro, TN; Edward Landers III of Sumter, SC; Serenity Howell, Sy’Air Howell, Ethan Oce, and Eden Oce of Indianapolis, IN. He is further survived by his special niece, Velma Gurnell, and dear family member, Loretta Square of Murfreesboro, TN
He leaves behind a host of nephews, great‑nephews, great‑great‑nephews, great-great‑great‑nephew, nieces, great‑nieces, great‑great‑nieces, cousins, extended family, and friends who cherished him.
James’s greatest joy was found in his children, grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, and the family and friends who surrounded him. He delighted in the simple pleasure of watching westerns, a pastime that brought him comfort and familiarity. His legacy is one of love, strength, and unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
