Obituary of James E. Vogel
James E. (Jim) Vogel 94, died March 3, 2017. He was born in Alexandria, Indiana on March 9, 1922 to Leo and Jennie Imhoff Vogel, the youngest of nine children. Jim graduated from Alexandria High School and began mechanical engineering studies at General Motors Institute before enlisting in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He trained as a B24 pilot and spent the latter part of the war in the Pacific. After the war ended in the Pacific, he remained in Japan for a year flying C-46’s loaded with food and supplies to Korea. Jim completed his engineering degree after returning from the war and worked at Allison Gas Turbine as an aircraft engine design engineer for 42 years. He married Marjorie Miles in 1952 and celebrated 58 years of marriage before her passing in 2010. Jim’s two passions were golf and travel. He learned to play golf while in Japan and continued to play until his early nineties. Jim traveled extensively with his family, aided by a three year assignment at Rolls Royce in Derby, England. After retirement, Jim and Marge moved to Florida and spent their summers traveling throughout the US and Canada with their travel trailer. Jim is survived by daughter Jan of Houston, Texas, son Russell (Karen) of Brownsburg, Indiana, and daughter Deborah (Anthony Perona) of Plainfield, Indiana, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Plainfield United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 9 at 2 pm with visitation starting at noon. Inurnment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield.
