Joan Dolly Morehead Stokes was born on April 11, 1934, in London, Ohio, to the late Reverend Jack Walton Sr. and Mrs. Minnie Jesse Martin Morehead. Rooted in faith from an early age, Joan grew into a devoted servant of God whose life reflected love, creativity, and quiet strength.
Joan attended school in Pennsylvania and graduated from Mount Union High School. Her faith remained central throughout her life as she worshipped in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, expressing her devotion through songwriting and poetry and sharing her love for the Lord in meaningful ways.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family and one of seven siblings: Marcia, who preceded her in death as an infant; Mrs. Jacqueline Balthrope; Rev. Dr. June Morehead Marable; Mr. Jack W. Morehead Jr.; Mrs. Evangeline Lincoln, Mr. Carlos Morehead. She is also preceded in death by her loving granddaughter Markeita M. Sanders. Together, they all shared a strong family bond that shaped Joan’s life and values.
Joan was thoughtful, caring, and deeply devoted to her entire family. She leaves to cherish her memory of her loving children: Allen Thornhill Jr., Darrell Thornhill (Jacqueline), Renee Thornhill Taylor, Brett Thornhill, and Jessica Davis (Robert). She is also remembered with love by her thirteen grandchildren, twenty‑five great‑grandchildren, and seven great‑great‑grandchildren, each of whom carries forward her legacy of faith, warmth, and enduring love.
Joan’s life was a beautiful testimony of grace, devotion, and steadfast faith. She will always be remembered for the warmth she gave, the creativity she shared, and the faith she lived every day.
