

John W. Lewis IV (Track),78, passed away on April 19,2021. John was born in Indianapolis to the late John W. Lewis Ill and Ruby Pitts Lewis on May 7, 1942. John attended IPS 87 and 42 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School, Class of 1960. John was a very active member of the Attucks Alumni locally as well as the national chapter.
John went on to serve his country from 1964 to 1966 as an Army Sergeant during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal (1st Award). He shortly thereafter began work at Detroit Diesel Allison Transmission where would also retire after 32 years. John was a member of UAW Local #933. After retirement John continued to very active with his high school alma mater. He enjoyed coordinating events and chairing various committees.
John began his spiritual journey at Barnes United Methodist Church where he was baptized by Reverend Ayers. John continued his faith journey as a 60-year member of Christ Cathedral Church in Indianapolis Indiana until his death.
Throughout his life John enjoyed his family, traveling, fine arts and history. He was a member of the Guys and Dolls Modeling Troup and volunteered his time to the Ebony Fashion Fair. All those that surrounded John he considered family and he was most gracious with his time, wisdom and traditions.
He was preceded in death by his parents John William Ill and Ruby Pitts Lewis as well as his brother in law Donald Ragland and niece Danielle Ragland. He leaves to honor his memory: his siblings Nancy Lewis Ragland, Stephen Michael Lewis Sr. (Paulette); nieces and nephew, Denise A. Lewis (Patch), Cortnei R. Lewis- Weaver (Matt E. Sr.) and Stephen Michael Lewis Jr.; great nieces and great nephews, Dale Allen Patch, Matt E. Weaver Jr., Elijah M. Weaver, Stephanie M. Lewis, Lauren R. Lewis, Alec G. Weaver and Josephine R. Weaver; sister embraced Bennie Mae Royal; nephew embraced Sterlin Guy Lewis, and numerous cousins and friends.
