

Joseph graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and went on to earn his PhD in psychology from Loyola University in Chicago. His academic career reflected a lifelong commitment to scholarship, teaching, and the advancement of psychology.
In June 1965, he married Eleanor Quinn of St. Louis, Missouri, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 60 years. Joseph served for more than four decades at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he became Professor Emeritus. During his distinguished career, he also played a role in founding the Department of Psychology at Marian University in the 1960s, helping to shape the education of future generations of students.
Joseph was an active and engaged member of his community. He belonged to the Indianapolis Literary Club and served as President of the Resident Council at Robin Run Senior Living Village, where he and Eleanor made their home for the past eleven years. A devoted patron of the arts, Joseph shared with Eleanor a love of music and performance; together they traveled widely to attend operas, concerts, and plays around the world.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Eleanor; his children, Cynthia Hingtgen (Grant Nicol), Christina Dooley (Tim), and Charles Hingtgen; his grandchildren, Caleb, Tyler, and AJ; step-grandchildren Liz and Ian; step-great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Ethan; and his sister, Barbara Compton.
Visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, Memorial Chapel, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, on March 16, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Monica Catholic Church, 6131 Michigan Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46228, on March 17, 2026, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra or the Indiana University School of Medicine.
