I was a 27 year old new engineer working in plant engineering right next to the purchasing group. I developed a terrific working relationship with Joe because he was a steel buyer and we had to work together to get large amounts of structural steel on time to build press pits. Thanks to him I never missed a deadline! Joe was also extremely competitive in sports and so was I. I loved playing against him in the GM Tennis league! Especially if I won a match against him because he was so competitive.
Joe trusted me when it came to car repairs and there were many times I saved him from being cheated by someone.
Once I took him for the ride of his life in my heavily modified 454 Corvette and I must admit I was sorry that I scared him so bad that he would not ride with me in a car again.
Joe was a person of conviction and had a terrific moral compass.
Regardless of the politics within our plant ( there was way too much of that) he always did the right thing. I respected him, I cared about him, I fixed his cars for him,
and I will certainly miss him.
This man is and was a class act!
Rest In Peace Joe!
Your friend,
Jeff Yeager

Joe was a true friend at GM Truck and Bus to me and our whole team, Bethlehem Steel. I enjoyed many enjoyable golf rounds with Joe. He truly supported GM and enjoyed his job. I am glad he was able to retire and have free time. He will be greatly missed.

Our deepest condolences to Cheryl and the entire family. Joe was my first 'boss' when I transferred to Indy but we were friends and partners more than boss and employee. Wonder how Joe is adapting to heaven as he was always afraid of heights whenever we went to visit the Steel Mills? RIP good friend.
