Josephine JoAnn Whitney Cheney, daughter of LaFayette Whitney Sr. and Lena Rivers Austin was born October 24, 1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She preferred to be called JoAnn, and everyone respected her wish. JoAnn attended Public School #26 and Crispus Attucks High School.
JoAnn loved the Lord. Early in life she professed her faith in Christ. She joined New Bethel Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. Baltimore; in 2001, She moved her membership to Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess. In 2013, she became a founding member of New Spiritual Life Christian Church served as a Deaconess and a Mother of the church, remaining faithful and devoted unto the end. Everyday JoAnn made time for her special morning prayer, her daily reading of the Bible and calls to family members and friends.
JoAnn was united in Holy Matrimony to Hubert Cheney on March 6, 1952, to this union, four children were born. JoAnn's husband Hubert preceded her in death.
JoAnn worked many years at RCA Corporation, she retired from corporate life and returned to the workforce as a Parent Liaison for IPS. She enjoyed working with the Arlington high school students.
JoAnn had a loving heart and was devoted to her family. She took pleasure in traveling with family. She enjoyed shopping, playing electronic and board games. JoAnn was happiest spending time with family, especially all her grandchildren.
Josephine JoAnn Whitney Cheney was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 13 days. JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, and two brothers: Phil Whitney and LaFayette Whitney, Jr.
JoAnn leaves to cherish her memory; Brother: Michael Whitney; Sister Kathy Breeding (James); Two sons: Ronald Cheney (Sandy), Hubert Canady (Jackie); three daughters: Debra Brown (Wayne Sr.), Linda Wallace (Anthony Sr.); Leslie Ford. Grandchildren: Angela Owsley, Jerry Owsley Jr. (De `Andre), Wayne Brown, Jr. (Nichelle), Robert Brown, Anthony Wallace II (Venus), Lena Middleton (Eric), Duane N. Ford Jr., Tonya Martin, Kathryn Ford, Kyana Cheney. She has twenty-three great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren. JoAnn will be greatly missed by her very special friend: Stephen Brunk and his cats. She will also be very much missed by her two pets, Jazzy Jr., and Olivia
A gathering of friends/visitation for Josephine will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at New Spiritual Life Christian Church, 1835 E. 30th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46218. Following the gathering of friends/visitation there will be a celebration of life service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
