Judith C. Ely was a woman of deep compassion, faith, and service. One of the accomplishments she was most proud of was her work as a chaplain with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, serving within the jail system. After furthering her education and completing the preparation necessary for chaplaincy, Judy dedicated herself to providing spiritual guidance, comfort, and a listening ear to those who needed it most. She believed that every person deserved compassion and the opportunity to be heard, regardless of their circumstances. Her work with those in the jail was a meaningful part of her life, and she took great pride in being able to serve others in that capacity.
Judy is survived by her beloved husband, Wartress Ely; her two sons, Mark Nieten and Scott Nieten; and her daughters-in-law, Penny Nieten and Marcel Nieten. She was a loving grandmother to 8; Becca, David, Allyson Kaley, Matthew, Adaline, Hailey, and Arin.
Judy’s greatest legacy was the love she gave to her family and the compassion she showed to others. She will be remembered not only as a wife, mother, grandmother, and family member, but also as someone who found purpose in serving people who were often at some of the most difficult points in their lives. Her memory will live on through the family she loved and the many lives she touched.
