Keith Edward Hartman, Sr. of Indianapolis, age 76 passed peacefully on February 23, 2021 after a long battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded in love by his wife and kids. A lifelong Hoosier, Keith would only want to be associated with Purdue, where he studied electrical engineering as a Boilermaker. He later completed his Business Management degree at the University of Indianapolis.
Keith had a long career and love for keeping your lights on. After 36 years with Indianapolis Power & Light Company where he was first a lineman, he then was in supervision and management of both overhead and underground lines service. He later was a consultant in utility services and project management with Pike Engineering. Keith had many passions in life. He and his wife loved time with friends and family, especially their kids and 8 grandchildren. A long-time servant leader, Keith was a dedicated member of Sertoma. He was a member of the Lawrence Sertoma Club, served as Sertoma’s Indiana State Governor and then was the International Director. Over the years, he also played many roles in leading church youth groups and serving as a Deacon at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Cumberland. Other roles included serving on the Board of Directors for Lutherwood Children’s Home, and serving in civic roles with IPL’s Speaker Series and as an IPL Ambassador. He also was active in the Warren Township GOP and was a life time member of the NRA. For the past several years, Keith was an active member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church and enjoyed serving on many local and international mission trips.
Aside from his professional experience and community service roles, Keith was adored as an amazing Dad, Papaw, husband and mentor. For the balance of his adult life, Keith was widely regarded as a coach and mentor for others. He impacted the lives of countless youth, including his own kids, as a softball and baseball coach through Warren Township Little League and the Central Indiana District 7 Little League Association. Keith enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, hunting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, golf and bowling.
Keith is survived by his wife of nearly 20 years, Deborah. His children Kelly Hartman (Mel) and Keith “Buzz” Hartman, Jr. (Natalie,) Step-daughters Chrystal Rogers (Dave,) and Rachel Hitch-Johnson (Mike,) and their 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Hartman, his mother, Lenora and Step Dad, Elmer Kleiman.
Services will be on Friday February 26th at Old Bethel United Methodist Church, located at 7995 E. 21st Street, Indianapolis. Visitation will begin 12:00 noon, followed by funeral services at 2:30 pm. A graveside service will be held immediately thereafter. He will be buried at the St. Johns United Church of Christ cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Old Bethel United Methodist Church.
