Leon was born in Augusta, Georgia to Linzie and Eliza Tompkins on November 4, 1936. After serving in the Air Force, he earned his B.S. in Chemistry with a Mathematics minor from Morehouse College. He went on to earn a doctorate from the University of California San Francisco in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and subsequently worked as a pharmaceutical researcher for Eli Lilly for over twenty years.
Leon loved working with his hands and was an avid handyman and property owner. He was also an active member of the community, holding several leadership positions within organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Versatile 11, Bachelor Benedicts and Alpha Phi Alpha.
Leon is preceded in death by his daughter, Deidra Lynette Thompkins.
Leon is survived by his son, Walden Prentice Thompkins; his brothers, Linzie Tompkins and Laverne Thompkins; his sister, Olivia Stephens and his granddaughter, Morgan Dora Thompkins.
A visitation will be held Wednesday July 2, 2025 from 9-11 a.m, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery with Dr. Winterbourne Harrison-Jones, of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, officiating.
