Lizzie was born March 2, 1924 to Nannie Mae and Gus Otto Darden. Lizzie was born and raised in Tennessee but moved to Indianapolis to raise her family. Lizzie was the eldest of the Darden children and she was known to protect and take care of them while growing up and as they got older. When moving to Indianapolis Lizzie married and had a family. She was known for being family oriented and made sure that her family was always first. Lizzie worked at Fort Harrison for over 30 years. Upon retirement she sat home for a year but could not resist the urge to work so she then gained employment at University United Methodist Church and was there for another 10 years. But we all know Lizzie and sitting still was not her cup of tea. You could then catch her at the Walmart as a door greeter for another 7 years.
Lizzie was a loving mother to her daughter Mae Gale and her 6 grandchildren. She was always there for them. Even so that she opened her heart and home to three of her grandchildren and raised them as her own. She would often say that she loved everyone. By that she meant that “to love someone is to help them even when you yourself need help”. That was Momma Lizzie, always helping and giving even when she did not have it to give.
Momma Lizzie will be remembered by many great things but most importantly her giving, caring, and passionate spirit. She was always calm, positive, and uplifting even when the situation called for different.
Momma Lizzie gained her wings on May 7, 2021 at the precious age of 97. She was preceded in death by her mother Nannie, father Gus, and daughter Mae Gale. She leaves to cherish her memory; her siblings, Gulliver Dee Darden (Ann), Thomas Darden (Johnetta), Bobby Darden (Dana) her grand-children, Eric Hart (Donna), Michelle Maye, Courtney Hart (Cicely), Raymar Hart, Jason Hart and Jerry Malone Jr; great-grands, Erik, Katie, Lizzie, David, Enique, Damon, Henri, Cidney, Courtney Jr, Brandy, Taijana, Jayda, Jaylen, Jason, Tamon, Tyai, Tahj, Jerry III, James, and Jaxon.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the staff at Bloom at Eagle Creek and Heart to Heart Hospice for caring for Lizzie for the last 7 years and in her final days.
