Mr. Lucius Neal Perry, 82, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana with his loving and devoted wife by his side. A man who never met a stranger and always wore a hat, was affectionately known by many as "Hat Man".
Born on January 5, 1943, in Brownsville, Tennessee, Lucius was the son of Henry Perry and Susie Lee Perry. His early years were filled with curiosity and discipline—qualities nurtured during his time as a Boy Scout, which brought him great joy and many stories to share. He spent his formative years in Indianapolis, where he attended School 41 and later graduated from Shortridge High School. There he not only excelled in academics, but also in sports. He ran track and played baseball and was the star quarterback of the football team. He was also in the letterman club.
In 1966, Lucius answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. During his military service in Vietnam, he distinguished himself through meritorious conduct and was awarded a certificate of achievement in recognition of his contributions. He was honorably discharged on February 1, 1973.
Following his military service, Lucius began a long and steady career at Carrier (United Technologies), where he worked as a forklift operator. Over the course of four decades with the company, he became known for his reliability and strong work ethic before retiring after 40 years of dedicated service.
Lucius married Mary Reynolds on November 4, 1994, in Louisville, Kentucky. During their marriage they travelled all over the US and Canada. In all their travels as through his life, he never met a stranger. So needless to say, they would always leave with new friends. Both found joy in music and in later years traveled in his corvette, which enthused him as he had a lifelong appreciation for sports cars.
Lucius was an active member at Bethesda Apostolic Church for many years. He served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. While he loved being active in the church, he also cherished moments of solitude—time spent reflecting or simply enjoying peace and quiet.
Lucius was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry Perry Jr. and David Earl Maxwell. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Reynolds Perry; his son Mark Baker (Taresa); his sister Mary Cage; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, including close companions Thomas Jamerson and Denny Vandiver.
A visitation for Lucius will be held Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208 followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM.
