Obituary of Margaret Katherine Collins
Margaret Katherine Collins, age 102, of Indianapolis, Indiana returned home to be with the Lord on Monday May 11, 2020. Margaret was born February 16, 1918 in Adairville, KY to Rhea (Barnes) Burr and Gascon Burr. Margaret lived a long life, and she enjoyed all of her 102 years. She chose her own path, no matter what obstacles got in the way. She even changed her own first name so she could be named after her favorite Aunt. She attended Western Kentucky Teachers College, now known as Western Kentucky University, for a few years before deciding to enlist in the Navy. This was almost unheard of for a woman during that time. She was independent and loyal to her country. Margaret was stationed in Washington D.C. during WWII where she met the love of her life, Hugh Collins. He was in the Army when they met at Cavalry Baptist Church there in D.C.. Margaret and Hugh got married on December 2, 1944 in D.C. a year before the war ended. In late 1946, Margaret and Hugh moved to Lakewood, a Cleveland, Ohio suburb. They attended the Lakewood Baptist Church. Margaret and Hugh were married for 47 years, before he passed away. They had one daughter, Mimi. Margaret loved to be involved in Mimi's activities. She was the troop leader when her daughter was in the Girl Scouts. Growing up as an only child herself, it made sense to Margaret to dedicate her time to only one child as well. During a great portion of her life, Margaret was a Deaconess at Lakewood Baptist Church. She was dedicated to spreading God's message, and found comfort in her religion. In addition to being a long-time Deaconess, she volunteered for various church activities and was a member of several church clubs. Margaret eventually moved to Indianapolis to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She attended Northminster Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women's Society. She is survived by; daughter Mimi Davis, and son-in-law Larry Davis. In addition to her husband Hugh, Margaret was preceded in death by both of her parents. She will be greatly missed by her family, and all of those who knew her. A private burial will take place at Marion National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Margaret's memory may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Blvd E Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46220 US, https://www.shelbygiving.com/App/Giving/nort1660293; and Dementia Society of America, PO Box 600, Doylestown, Pennsylvania 18901 US, https://www.dementiasociety.org/donate.
