Mark Gerard Gibson, the first-born of Dr. Alois E. & Jean L. (Weeke) Gibson, passed away peacefully at The Springs of Richmond. Born in Indianapolis, Mark was raised in Richmond, Indiana, where he attended St. Mary’s Grade School, Julia E. Test Junior High School, and graduated from Richmond Senior High School with the Class of 1979.
Mark was born with a brilliant mind for math and science, a love for sports, statistics, computer coding and 1970’s music. Mark had the gift of leadership and had many friends. In his youth he enjoyed basketball, tennis and sailing. His quick wit and “Mark Jokes” will be missed. He had the ability to teach others to understand difficult subject matter, especially math and science. At the age of fifteen doctors discovered that Mark had an inoperable brain tumor. Mark survived many radiation treatments and continued to excel while facing some new health challenges, most noticeably, short-term memory. Mark attended Rose-Hulman for several years; he persevered and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State.
Mark relocated to Indianapolis and resided with his parents where he taught in local schools. His patience and leadership gave him the unique ability to teach others difficult subject matter, particularly math and science. A skill acknowledged on occasion by former students who simply felt the need to approach him and express their gratitude.
Mark’s faith life was very important to him. In his youth and into his young adulthood, Mark attended St Mary Catholic Church, first serving as Altar Boy, and ultimately as a Eucharistic Minister. While residing in Indianapolis, Mark was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where he served as Greeter and member of a wonderful faith-sharing group.
At the age of 40, Mark’s health took another turn following a disabling stroke. Mark returned to Richmond in July 2022. Mark met lifelong challenges with patience, understanding and acceptance.
Mark is survived by his sisters, Karen (Rick) Ruhl and Susan (Ted) Albert; his brothers, David (Riitta), Daniel (Becki) and Paul (Lori Wall); nephews, Andrew and Matthew Albert, Jack Gibson; nieces, Erin Albert, Eeva-Liisa and Helena Gibson; uncle and aunts, Bill (Carol) Weeke, Gwynne Gibson and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, uncles and aunts, Cyril Gibson, Donald (Minnie Matilda) Gnewuch, Eugene (Erna) Meert, Ed (Betty) Henderson.
Visitation will take place at 9:30AM prior to the 10:30AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 4th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 4600 N. Illinois St, Indianapolis, IN. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Mark’s family would like to thank the staff at The Springs of Richmond for their loving care and dedication to Mark in the past 21 months. Additionally Mark’s family would like his friends from his youth to know that he retained an amazing recall in the smallest detail of childhood adventures with his buddies before the age of fifteen that would make us smile and laugh, because it brought joy to his face and the laugh we recall. Those memories will remain with us.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Indianapolis, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Richmond, Reid Health Hospice or to your favorite charity.
