Kathryn Cowan as the oldest of eight children. She attended Secina High School graduating in
1965. Mary Lou loved growing up “on the farm” and was an active participant in 4H. After high
school, Mary Lou went on to Ball State University majoring in Home Economics and Teaching.
Mary Lou also earned a master’s degree in Theology.,
In 1980 Mary Lou was married to Dr. Walter Henry Fischer DVM. They had one
daughter, Mary K., who was born May 29, 1981.
Mary Lou worked for the Catholic Church in one form or another for her entire career,
teaching at Ladywood-St. Agnes School and Roncalli High School. She held positions as
Director of Religious Education at St. Pius X and St. Louis De Montfort eventually retiring from
St. Louis De Montfort in 2018 as Pastoral Associate.
Through her work Mary Lou touched thousands of lives giving her time, compassion,
and love to all that needed it. She will be remembered as a kind, caring, and loving person
who embodied Christ’s call to serve one another by her colleagues and parishioners.
Additionally she will be remembered as a loving grandmother and mother, a goofball with a
great sense of humor, and a fierce advocate for those who needed her help by her family and
friends.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Walt Fischer (“Doc”) and her sister
Elizabeth. She is survived by her daughter Mary K. (Wes Bickers), her favorite (and only)
grandchild Wesley Bickers, and her siblings: Al, Linda, Priscilla, Nancy, Clara, and Barbie.
She will be laid to rest next to “Doc” in a private family ceremony. The family is planning a yet to be
finalized Memorial Mass and luncheon to be held at St. Louis De Montfort for friends,
colleagues, and parishioners.
