Mary T. Maexner, 90, of Indianapolis died on Friday, January 17, 2020. She was born July 4, 1929 in New York, NY to Irish immigrants, Thomas and Mary McKeever. The only girl with three brothers, she was raised in the Bronx and graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School. In 1959, she married Edward Maexner and had four children before being transferred by his job to Indianapolis in 1967. They had a fifth child in Indiana and were married 53 ½ years prior to his passing.
Professionally, Mary became a real estate broker achieving Million Dollar Club status. Following retirement, she started tutoring Pike Township school kids and taking story writing classes jotting down the tales she'd tell.
Mary was very active in her St. Monica Catholic Church parish participating in the women's club, being a leader in their pro-life group amongst other activities. Having left a large extended family and having no family in Indiana, she created a surrogate family of neighbors and friends from church always inclusive of newcomers.
Like her father, she loved to tell stories. Mary would entertain her children and their cousins with tales about the time she bumped out of a rumble seat and was caught before falling into a manhole; of her nearly being caught skipping school for a Frank Sinatra concert by her father an NYPD cop; her adventures traveling alone by ship to Europe; her job as a tour guide at Rockefeller Center and many more.
She is survived by her five children, Mary Beth (Joseph) Topczynski (NY), Edward Charles (Teresa) Maexner III, Beverly (Brian) Booth (IL), Leslie (Jim) Cole (AZ) and Gabrielle (Kurt) King; nine grandchildren: Kellie, Nicole and Casie Maexner; Taylor, Kaleigh and Brianna Booth, and Regan, Owen and Ethan King as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward Maexner and her brothers, Thomas, Emmet and Lawrence McKeever.
Visitation will be at St. Monica Catholic Church on Monday, January 27th from 4:00pm - 8:00pm with a mass held Tuesday, Jan 28th at 11am. Burial is to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Mary T. Maexner to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
