Merle Melvin Bettenhausen, 82, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026. He was a man defined by a legendary "fighting spirit," a trait that guided him through the highs of a storied racing career and the challenges of a life lived with immense resilience.
Born on June 9, 1943, in Blue Island, Illinois, the son of Melvin “Tony” Bettenhausen and Valerie Rice Bettenhausen Stephan, Merle grew up immersed in the world of motorsports.
In 1972, Merle’s life changed forever during a racing accident at Michigan International Speedway, which resulted in the loss of his right arm. True to his nature, he refused to let the injury define him. He returned to the cockpit with a prosthetic arm, proving to the world that his determination was far stronger than any obstacle—a legacy of toughness that inspired generations of fans and fellow drivers alike.
Beyond the racetrack, Merle was a man of deep conviction and quiet strength. A veteran of the United States Army, he carried his sense of duty into his retirement, where he spent much of his time volunteering for the VA and Warrior’s Hope, supporting his fellow servicemen and women. He was a proud father, grandfather, and a bedrock for his family, spending his final years surrounded by the love of his children, grandchildren, and the racing community he called home.
Merle is survived by his children, Tracy (Matt) Jennings and Ryan (Mandy) Bettenhausen. He was a doting grandfather to Reed (Ashlin), Liam, Anna, Avery, Finley, Sloan, and Ford, and a proud great-grandfather to Cecilia. He also leaves behind his sister, Susan Bettenhausen, and his sister-in-law, Wavelyn Bettenhausen, as well as a loving group of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Valerie; his brother, Gary; his brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Shirley Bettenhausen; and his nephew, Gary Scott.
