At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during WWII. He was an accomplished musician and played clarinet and saxophone while on tours in the South Pacific. Once out of the Navy, he enrolled in and graduated from Butler University, Jordan Conservatory of Music, where he received the prestigious Pi Kappa Lamda music award from the Association of College Honor Societies. While attending Butler University, he met the pretty little girl sitting next to him who was the first chair clarinetist, Jane Lee Schnell, from Evansville, Indiana. He took every opportunity to remind us all that she was the better player. Bob was a lifetime member of the Indianapolis Musicians Union, Local #3. He was considered a "first call†saxophone and clarinetist around the Indianapolis and surrounding areas for a number of years. After graduating Butler University, Bob worked at Western Electric in Indianapolis. Soon afterward he took a job with Mead Johnson/Bristol Myers where he worked as a sales representative for over 20 years, retiring at age 55. Upon retirement Bob immersed himself in running, biking, swimming and working out at the YMCA and Riviera Club. He participated in countless triathlons, biathlons, swim meets, bike events, and marathons as evidenced by the numerous trophies, plaques, medals, ribbons and T-shirts. One of the highlights of his training was qualifying for the Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon. Some of his personal favorite events were Bop-To-The-Top, the Mini, and The Hilly Hundred.
