
Anna Gale Dortch died peacefully at Marquette Manor Nov.1, 2009 at the age of 90. Born Dec. 26, 1919, she was the daughter of Joshua Allan Greenland and Emily Campbell Greenland and grew up in Ft. Wayne, Indianapolis, and Terra Haute, Indiana.
Anna Gale greatly valued her deep Christian roots. Her maternal grandfather, Presbyterian pioneer Dr. William Creighton Campbell, served as senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA for 42 years and also started six other Presbyterian churches.
Wife to the late Carl R. Dortch for 53 years, Anna Gale is survived by her devoted sister, Emily W. Greenland, her sons, Walter and David Dortch, and her grandchildren, Aaron Carl Dortch and Caroline Ann Dortch. Her brother, Joshua Allan Greenland, Jr., passed away in CA in August, 2009.
Anna Gale attended Mary Baldwin College and was graduated from Butler University. While there, she joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She then worked for the Indianapolis Power & Light Co. and the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce before meeting and marrying Carl and starting a family. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Rehm Guild. Anna Gale was a member of The Southern Club of Indianapolis, The Huguenot Society, charter member of the Scottish Society, Clan Campbell Society, Fall Creek Garden Club, past VP of the Advocates for White River State Park and past president and member of the board of directors for the Indiana Regional Blood Center. She and Carl loved to travel and frequently visited exotic locales around the world.
Anna Gale may have been rather short in stature, but she was long in personality and commanding presence. She had a strong sense of humor with a mischievous wit, a sociable nature, an appreciation of music, a love of vocabulary, and a keen interest in traveling and current political and news events.
A memorial service for Anna Gale will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Friday Nov. 6 at 2:30 PM. Calling will be at 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM.
