

Edith Hughes Patterson
90, of Indianapolis, passed away on December 16, 2016. She was born on May 7, 1926 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Twidell and Lillian (Hazelwood) Hughes. The youngest of five children, Edith was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers; Rev. Dr. Carl D. Hughes and William Hughes and 2 sisters; Geraldine Cork and Faye Price. Edith attended Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from West Virginia State College (now W. VA University) and a Master Degree in Education from Indiana University with additional studies completed at Butler University in School Administration. Her early years of teaching were spent at Elementary Schools 24, 4, 59, 79 and 28 as Assistant Principal. Her joy was in teaching and believed that with guidance, love and motivation children could achieve their goals. After 31 years of dedicated service in her chosen teaching profession Edith retired in 1994. After retirement she volunteered at Methodist Hospital as a receptionist in Lobby A and B. She was active in community work and was a member of Dialogue Today, Metro Friends, Clowes Hall Women’s Committee, Crispus Attucks High School Alumni and Foundation, W. VA State Alumni, Indiana University Alumni, Indiana Retired Teachers Assoc., Retired Life ISTA-NEA member, National Links, Inc., a Silver Star and life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Alpha Mu Omega Chapter. Edith friends referred to her as the: “THE LITTLE COMMITTEE WOMAN”. Traveling was an integral part of her life; she traveled extensively within the U.S., Europe, Mexico, South Africa, West Africa, South America and the Caribbean. She was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, joining in December of 1940 and further expressing her religious conviction by rendering service through the Christian Education Leadership Development Committee, the Archives Committee, Crusaders Club and a life member of the Rev. R.T. Andrew Scholarship, Inc. Her memory will be forever cherished by her son Jerome A. Meriweather, Indianapolis, IN and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, Dec 29, 2016 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3500 Graceland Ave., Indpls, IN 46208, with services at 11am.
