December 3, 1946 - September 3, 2020
Close friends into their 70's, Jimmie Cooper, companion from kindergarten being neighbors in Stilesville, both went into transportation Jimmie Airplanes and Paul Trains, graduated Stilesville High School together, then Indiana State College room mates - Paul went on to IU Bloomington Law School for his Juris-Doctorate, worked in Danville Prosecutors Office before opening Private General Law Practice in Danville for 10 years.
Paul joined the railroad in 1969, worked his way thru Law School while being Railroad Freight Train Conductor, scheduling court cases, attorney client meetings, and appearances in trial court during the off days and when railroading was slow in the beginning, took a few years, but time came as he gained seniority he needed make the difficult decision to leave the law - for which he dearly loved till the day he died - or remain with transportation. Lawyers in private practice never retire, are responsible for their own pension etc, no health benefits, purchase own health insurance etc for family ,,,, so the Railroad won out, with the guaranteed comfortable retirement pension plan, excellent health insurance benefit after 40 years of railroading service.
Paul has the heart of a soldier, a servant wanting to serve his country, he joined the Indiana Guard Reserve (IGR) serving the State of Indiana for 39 years. 2nd Brigade Commander until IGR Headquarters (HHD) requested him to command the Civil and Family Affairs Department at Tyndall Armory Headquarters, few years later the IGR Major General awarded Colonel Paul A. Vaughn the honor of Director of Recruiting and Retention at HHD Tyndall Armory.
Colonel PAV exhibited Leadership and Dedication to Service wearing the uniform and representing the great State of Indiana during many missions throughout his 39 year tenure.
Amongst Paul's many hobbies was Numismatics, the study and collection of currency, coins, tokens, paper money and related objects. His vast collection of books on the many facets of collecting from ancient coins/currency and around the world, he had a special penchant for Scotland and Newfoundland pieces and history, Paul was a disciplined collector and educator. The Coin Shows and Exhibits that he would provide for Educational Learning and Enjoyment for other numismatists would lead to becoming Secretary, for many years serving on the Board of Directors of The Indianapolis Coin Club.
Paul was a true historian, he loved history, and could talk history about anything to anyone, and he rarely met a stranger. Yes he was educated so intelligent and always the diplomat and life of the party all were drawn to his magnetic personality. He was like a walking talking Encyclopedia, many were captivated by his wordsmithing ability. Paul used language with especial skill or craft, and indeed could be considered a professional writer.

Yes, he was all that and so much more, Paul was a family man.
Paul loved the Lord and his church family, church is not something you go to, it is something you belong to - Paul loved belonging to and being a member of his church family.
New Maysville Community Church in Roachdale, IN with Pastor Larry Edwards was 'home' for Paul. The Spiritual Nourishment received enhanced each area of life for Paul and I'm sure all the members and all who attend feel the same. Pastor Larry Edwards is just that good at relaying God's word!
Paul loved animals of all breeds and considered them family in our home, we've welcomed many thru the years, I'm sure they were thrilled to welcome their 'Daddy' in Heaven on September 3rd.
Paul leaves behind his beloved wife, partner and team-mate Venus, Sons Anthony and Michael and Step Sons David and Danny Sidebottom. Sister-in-law Cherie Miller (Ronnie) Brothers-in-law Patrick Welch, Michael Welch (Holly), Theodore Welch (Lee) Nephews Robert Welch (Ella) Jeffrey Cleek, Jr (Aubrey) Nieces Guenevere Welch, Laurie Cleek (Jeff), Aimee Miller, Cousin Steve Moore (Diane) .
Tony and Paul especially shared many hobbies together actively collecting, talking history, both being intelligent wordsmiths, the conversations were buoyant, jovial, deep and profound at same time. This loss is especially difficult for Tony who lost his Mother a year ago. Please say an extra prayer for Tony, the void losing both his parents within a year can't possibly be filled, but this Step Mom is sure going to try.
My husband and I have been referred to as, "The Colonel and His Lady", the Colonel's Lady feels lost and heartbroken without him.
September 3rd, a tragic bizarre freak fatal accident as Paul fell at home hitting his head on concrete block, mumbled his last loving words about our life together, as I seemed to see his soul leave his body.
