Richard affectionately known as “Dick” was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Edmund and Ada Sears. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Lavon Sears, Lois Bruce, Barbara Jean Bishop, and Edmund Sears Jr.
Dick graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, where he played baseball and first developed his lifelong interest in working on cars. He enjoyed understanding how things worked and took pride in the creativity, patience, and skill required to fix things.
Dick later served in the United States Army. Following his service, he attended Ball State University on the GI Bill. After school, he started a family and, in time, discovered the work that would become his lifelong calling: barbering.
As a barber, Dick brought together the qualities that defined him—attention to detail, steady hands, conversation, and genuine connection with people. His barber chair was a place where relationships were built, stories were shared, and people left looking and feeling a little better than when they arrived.
Dick enjoyed working on his cars, puzzles, cooking for others, and time with family. He approached life with an independence and a strong willingness to figure things out for himself. Those who loved him will remember his character, his conversations, and the many ways he showed care through his presence and actions.
Dick is survived by his three children, Stephanie Sears, Norman Sean Sears, and Semone Jones; and his four grandchildren, Zoe and Asha Baker, and Rayden and Rylen Simmons. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Ada Denise Bonds, Luther Davis, Kim Sears, Stacey Lee, Regina Sears, Chris Sears, Candace Sears, and many grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
Dick leaves behind a loving family and many friends who will cherish the memories, lessons, and stories he shared throughout his life.
