Born in Cloverdale, Virginia, Ruby arrived April 11, 1924, the sixth child of Digby Norcott Greene and Hattie Greene (nee Shipp). As the "tail-ender", she enjoyed a special fellowship with her mother. She left college to join the war effort working in Norfolk at the Navy shipyards. She graduated in 1946 from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a degrees in sociology and business. In 1951, she married James Monroe Carter at University Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she served as Christian Education Director.
She and Jim moved their growing family to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to begin his medical practice and embraced the winter and water wonderland. She loved anything outdoors! After the family moved to West Virginia, she became active in the First United Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday school for over thirty years and serving as its first female deacon. She also served as president of the Women's Hospital Auxiliary and was a 52-year member of P.E.O.
As a young teen, Ruby encountered a living Savior in Jesus Christ. She placed her life in his hands at 13 and His love showed through in all she did.
"Mom loved her children, grandchildren, golf, tennis, words, reading long novels, mowing the lawn, tinkering with broken electrical items, and strawberry ice cream. She was Godly, funny, compassionate, loving, and joyful. She lit up a room with her smile and grace."
Ruby is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, both parents, four brothers and a sister. She is survived by her children: Sharon Poole (Jeffrey) of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jill Kendrat (Mark) of Carmel, Indiana, J. Chett Carter (Audre) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and, Chyrise Ney (Kenneth) of Carmel, Indiana, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Crown Hill Cemetery on Friday, April 24th. Attendance was limited to 10 but the service is available for view on Crown Hill's Facebook page.
Memorials may be given to MissiontoUkraine.org or PEOinternational.org.
