

Samuel (Sam) Fitzgerald Young was born to Savannah and Nelson Young, Jr on Saturday, January 4, 1964 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Sam was raised as a disciplined, respectful, hardworking young man who knew the Lord as his Savior.
Samuel attended schools within the Clarksdale Public School district in Clarksdale, MS. He was a graduate of Clarksdale High School Class of 1982. After completing his high school education, Sam attended Coahoma Community College where he majored in Auto Mechanics.
In 1983, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Through hard work and expertise, Sam exceled in his various roles and job opportunities. Most recently, he was employed at Lafayette Steel. In addition, he held employment for several years at International Metals where he was promoted to the role of Shipping Department Logistics Director. Sam was also an entrepreneur, and impacted many in the community through his work. He was the proud owner of Smilin’ Sam Lawn Service and Executive Chef of Smilin’ Sam’s Catering. While Sam was naturally gifted in the culinary arts, he sought formal training and graduated with the 62nd Class of Second Helpings Culinary School. Sam was also featured on The Shift, a television show that aired between 2008-2010 where he showcased his culinary expertise and talent.
Sam was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and was also a member of the Gospel Choir. He won several Top Chef Competitions at Mt Carmel Baptist Church. It was at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church that Sam met his devoted wife, Kimberly. In December 2002, on a trip to Mississippi, Sam announced his intention to marry Kim. On March 27, 2004, Sam and Kim were married in the presence of their friends and family. Together, they enjoyed many leisure activities including bowling, scouting, fishing, and traveling. Sam explored many cities in the U.S. and the world. In 2013, he attended the World Police Fire Games in Belfast, Ireland and also visited London, England during that trip
Sam was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was dedicated to his family and he enjoyed spending time with his only daughter, Cherelle, sons and grandchildren. Sam treasured his close relationship with his daughter and grandchildren, and carved out time to have daily conversations, activities, and outings with his grandchildren. Sam’s warmth and generosity touched many lives in Indianapolis and beyond.
Sam was called home to be with the Lord on May 14, 2014. He was preceded in his death by his father Nelson Young Jr. He is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly Jointer Young, one daughter, Cherelle Renee Young, and three sons Jarvis (Amy), Jason Jointer (Arika) and Jalen-Latroy Terrell; He is also survived by his mother, Savannah Young; four brothers, Ralph Stokes (Cora), Anthony, Calvin and Kelvin Young; two sisters, Annette Young Jenkins and Albertenia Young.; four grandchildren, Dennis and Devin James, Sarah and Jarvis Jr. Jointer, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The visitation will take place on Friday, May 22, 2015, 9am – 11am, with the Homegoing Celebration commencing at 11am in Mt. Carmel Church, 9610 E. 42nd Street. The burial will immediately follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
