Stanley Eugene Holliday was born on May 7, 1939, in Gary, Indiana. Stanley was the beloved son of the late Alfonso David Holliday Sr. and Anna Helen Caldwell Holliday. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alfonso D. Holliday II.
Stanley graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1957 and went on to pursue higher education with dedication and purpose. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, a Master’s degree in Business
Administration, and an Education Specialist degree in School Administration from Indiana University Northwest and Indiana University. His lifelong love of learning and teaching would create the course of his remarkable career.
Stanley began his teaching career in Gary Public Schools, where his passion for education and commitment to shaping young minds quickly became evident. In December of 1978, he relocated to Indianapolis, continuing his distinguished career in education with Indianapolis Public Schools and later the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township. For more than 30 years, Stanley served in multiple roles—including Evening School Director for Indianapolis Public Schools, Supervisor of Social Studies at Indiana University, and teacher at both North Central High School and Northwest High School—leaving a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the greater community.
On August 27, 1966, Stanley married the love of his life, Vera Marie Courtney. Together they shared 58 years of marriage, a union grounded in love, and family. Stanley was a proud and devoted father to their
daughter, Shellie, who brought him immeasurable pride. His joy multiplied as he became “Grandpa” to four cherished grandchildren— Lauren, KJ, Kellie, and Lyndsey—and later “Great-Grandpa” to Malakai
and Moriah. Stanley will be remembered not only as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, but also as an educator, mentor, and leader whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. He inspired countless individuals with his calm strength, and his unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives.
Stanley leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Vera Holliday; daughter Shellie (Kevin) Edwards; grandchildren, Lauren Holliday, Kevin Edwards II, Kellie Edwards, and Lyndsey (Landon) Wright; great-grandchildren, Malakai Burton and Moriah Wright; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, colleagues, and friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Stanley’s life was marked by service, scholarship, and steadfast love for his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know and love him.
A visitation for Stanley will be held Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM.
