Ginny was born in Washington, IN on October 24, 1936. She was the daughter of J. Arthur and Emma O’Neill and sister to J. Edward O’Neill. When Ginny was nine they moved to Vincennes, IN, where she grew up living next door to the family flower shop and greenhouse, learning to drive in the shop’s delivery van.
She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953 at age 16 and had earned her Associates degree from Vincennes University at age 18, where she was a Job’s Daughters Honor Queen. After graduation, in the fall of 1955 (still age 18!) she began teaching third grade in Bridgeport, IL. Teaching remained her passion throughout her life. Continuing to substitute until her late 70’s, she loved to inspire students in different ways. There are likely some out there still using one of the hundreds of bookmarks she hand-made over the years to pass out to the kids.
Ginny married John S. Patrick in August 1956. They moved to Indianapolis in 1963, which remained her home for the rest of her years. She had the joy of raising three children, Matthew E., Cameron K., and Erin S. Patrick.
Ginny was maybe best known for her smile. It was big and bright and infectious. She brought smiles to the faces of all who knew her, including the amazingly gifted and compassionate staff at Hooverwood Living where Ginny had resided since May 2018. They became family in every sense of the word. Please consider a donation to Hooverwood Living in her memory.
