

William Alexander Scott, Sr., the son of Tom and Laura Scott, was born on a farm in Pheba, Mississippi. His parents and thirteen siblings preceded him in death. Five sisters, Ora L. Scott, Dora L. Scott, Laura A. Scott-Hornsby, Jane E. Scott-Gibson, and Grace O. Scott-Webb; and eight brothers, Samuel D. Scott, Feaster R. Scott, Vernon T. Scott, Theodore J. Scott, Joseph E. Scott, Albert C. Scott, Orange D. Scott, and Pompey G. Scott.
William's early education was in the Mississippi Clay County School System. He enjoyed math, science and was mechanically inclined. He intuitively understood how something needed to be assembled or fixed. He graduated Valedictorian of his senior class in 1947. He went on to attend Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. After a year at Dillard, he came to Indianapolis, Indiana to stay with his sister, Jane E. Scott-Gibson.
William was married in Holy Matrimony to Lorene Hughes on April 21st, 1951. To this union nine children were added; Debra Ann, William R., Sandra, Karen, Mark, Alta, Bonita, William A., II and Frederick. Twenty-seven grandchildren, and at the present time at least fifty great-grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his wife Lorene, and three grandchildren; Jacqueline S. Scott, Katrina Scott, and William A. Scott, III.
In 1951 William was drafted into the Army, and served in the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea he became a chauffeur. In 1956 he started working for Western Electric, an electrical engineering and manufacturing company. William was a knowledgeable and dedicated worker and rose to the position of foreman. He retired in 1992, after 36 years of service. He also worked for Sears Automotive Center and the United States Postal Service.
William was a member of Zion Hope Baptist Church. He was a man of strong faith and knew the Lord. A faith passed on to him by his mother, whom he watched pray and read the bible. He believed in Almighty God and prayed through all circumstances.
William believed in making financially wise decisions to provide for his family, consequently he was fascinated with the stock market. He read and studied to be knowledgeable about how the market operated. He would help you to invest and understand investing. He loved his family and people, and was always helping in any way he could. He was a giving man who believed in doing all he could to take care of his family. He did so without expectation of anything in return or recognition. He believed he was blessed to bless others, and he lived his life doing exactly that.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters, Sandra (Bruce) Seagraves, Karen Scott, Alta Cole and Bonita Scott; sons, William R. (Donna) Scott, of San Diego, California, Mark (Joyce) Scott of Germany, William A. (Odessa) Scott, II and Frederick Scott; Twenty-four grandchildren; at least fifty great-grandchildren; sister, Beatrice Graham-Lewis; sister-in-law, Delores (Robert) Gregory and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
