On August 23, 2023, at home surrounded by family and friends, Albert Glen Holmes, 83, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend met his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ face to face. Glen will join his parents, George Ruel Holmes and Earline Cooper Holmes and his stepmother Roberta Bradshaw Holmes who had preceded him.
Glen is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Gail Rushing Holmes and their three children: Derek Glen Holmes (Penny), Shannon Holmes Bush (Andrew), and Jaret Devlin Holmes (Sarah), and their nine grandchildren: Catherine Claire Holmes Rhodes (Morgan), Madeline Marshall Holmes, Derek Grant Holmes; Abigail Skylar Bush, Cheyne Rebekah Bush, Sloane Devlin Bush; Cooper Elizabeth Holmes, Brady Glen Holmes, and Alexandria Webb Holmes. Glen is also survived by his sister, Nina Merle Russell, and many nieces and nephews.
Glen graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1957 where he played basketball and was involved in many school activities. Glen furthered his education at Mississippi College where he played on the Choctaw basketball team and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
After college he spent two months at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Glen desired to be a pilot. Unfortunately, due to poor eye sight, he was not able to fulfill this dream and rather joined the Air Force Reserve.
Although Glen spent the majority of his working career in the world of sales, his first job was in the accounting department of Standard Oil of Kentucky. After a short period of time Glen moved into sales with Standard Oil on the Gulf Coast. In 1968 he had the opportunity to join the sales department of IBM at the recommendation of friend, Bill Durr. He quickly moved into a management position, moving to manage the St. Louis, MO office. The policy of IBM was to move managers every two years, but being a true southern boy at heart, when forced with moving to White Plains, NY, Glen requested that he move back into sales with IBM in Jackson, MS. After 13 years with IBM, Glen along with friends Ben Walker, Steve McBride and John Shivers decided to go into business together and started Unitech of Mississippi that was eventually bought by Alco Standard and the name was changed to IKON as it remains today. After selling his business, Glen retired in 1998 allowing him to fulfill a lifelong dream of running a small cattle farm thus he and Gail established Double G Farms in Edwards, MS.
Glen had a servants heart and was always finding new ways to serve those around him. He served on the board at Hinds General Hospital as well as taking on different leadership positions in Morrison Heights Baptist Church. There he was a deacon and often served as their chairman. He also became one of the initial elders when MHBC implemented their elders program. His last committee service was chairman of the Building Committee that built the current church plant on Hampstead Boulevard in Clinton. Glen’s heart was always focused on his God, his family and his church. During all these years, Glen’s greatest joy was teaching a co-ed Sunday School class where every member was precious to him.
After retirement, besides his Sunday School family, Glen’s joy was spending time with his family. He coached his two boys in baseball while also acting as an unofficial coach to his grandchildren after their baseball or soccer games. Glen and Gail traveled the country in their RV following first their kids, then their grandkids, for whatever show choir or sporting event was on the schedule.
We extend thanks to Hospice ministry for their love and care these past twelve weeks with special thanks to nurses Beth Alliston and Karen McGivney.
