Mrs. Alma Thomas Bowers, born May 1, 1918 to Walter T. Thomas and Florence Dozier Thomas in Neshoba County, MS. Alma was the youngest of 4 sisters with 3 brothers that lived to adulthood. Alma began playing basketball at Madden High School, and playing ball became a lifetime love for her. When she worked at the General Electric Plant in Jackson, she played on a women’s basketball team for years.
Immediately prior to WWII, Alma Thomas married Marcus Bowers. He was called into the army and served in Europe. Alma waited for his return to Jackson, MS, which became their residence until after Marcus’ death. She moved to the Cascades in Clinton and later to TracePointe (now Brookdale). Alma has been a longtime active member of Parkway Baptist Church of Jackson, and later of Clinton, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents, as well as brothers, William Thomas, and Oren Thomas, sisters, Celestia Thomas, Eolia Thomas Boothe, and Mary Etta Thomas Williams. She is survived by one brother, Julian Thomas of Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. in Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the service. Interment will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
