
Mr. Charles Robert Shapero, 86, passed away at his home on May 13, 2010. Charles was a native of Belzoni, MS, with residence in Jackson and Clinton for 56 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, father and mother Charles and Sadie Shapero, sisters Hilda Shapero and Natalie Goldberg and brother Benard Shapero. He is survived by his loving daughter, Donna S. Taylor, grandson Jake Reed, son-in-law Swepson Taylor and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shapero was the oldest window dealer in the Jackson metro area. He came to Jackson after WWII and went to work for two former Central High coaches, H. F. “Rookie” Broyles and R. W. “Scrap” Crawley at Mississippi Metal Products. They were his mentors and eventually he became president of the company. He then opened Shapero Window and Door Company Inc. which he operated until his death.
He was a WWII veteran with 3 years service in ETO (European). He said about his army experience “I went in as a private and I came out as a private”.
A long time member of Beth Israel Congregation, he served on the board in the early 1970’s. Until his death, he was correspondence secretary for the inactive B'nai B’rith Manassah Lodge 202.Even though the lodge is inactive, there are 18 members who keep up their dues. He was also Scoutmaster for the B’nai B’rith Scout Troop #305 for a number of years. He enjoyed camping, biking, and hiking with the troop. In addition he was a charter member of Clinton Nature Trail. He also enjoyed eating Friday lunch with members of Beth Israel.
Visitation will be at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High St. between the hours of 1 and 2:30 PM Monday, May 17, 2010. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM Monday in Beth Israel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Goldberg, Charles Goldberg, Greg Goldberg, Tony Bishop, Lawson Metz and Joe Harris, with alternates being David Levy and Leo Mermelstein. Honorary Pallbearers will be all members of the B’Nai B’rith Manassah Lodge 202.
The family wishes to thank all the employees of Shapero Window and Door Company who helped make the company a success, especially manager Carol Shute.
