Dorothy "Dott" Burgess

Dorothy "Dott" Burgess, age 95 passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 10 am to 12 pm with a funeral service to follow at 12 pm at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson, MS. Dorothy will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, Mississippi 39209.

She was born in Chicago July 4,1929 to Gatha and Louise Freeman. At the age of three she moved to Mize and was primarily raised by her grandmother, Sally Mayfield “Mama Sally.” While attending Mize School System she was a Cheerleader and Valedictorian. She furthered her studies at Draughon’s Business College.

Dorothy married Francis Norman Burgess and moved to Biloxi where he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base and she worked there as a Civilian. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a devoted Christian and member of Parkway Baptist Church.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her father, Gatha Freeman and mother, Louise Freeman; husband, Francis Norman Burgess “Butch”; son, Francis Norman Burgess, Jr “Si.” She is survived by her son, George “Gabby” Burgess (Jessica) of Madison; daughter, Amie Burgess Gunter; grandchildren, Taylor Burgess Laidlaw (Corey) of Nashville, Payton Burgess (Rachel) of Tampa, Brett Burgess of Nashville, Maxim Burgess of Madison, Gabrielle Gunter and Avery Gunter of Madison; one great grandchild, Allister Laidlaw of Nashville.
