She was born the youngest of five children to her parents, W. Irvin and Norma Kelley, in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 16, 1942. Her family later moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where she became a member of Parkway Baptist Church and graduated from Central High School in 1960.
After high school, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Baptist Hospital’s Gilfoy School of Nursing in 1968. She served her entire 44-year career caring for patients at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, and then retired in 2012.
She married her husband, Mack Shelton, at Parkway Baptist Church on January 21, 1984. They recently celebrated their 42nd anniversary before she passed.
She was a member of Brandon Baptist Church and the Roland Ryan Sunday School class there.
Gail was preceded in death by her parents, W. Irvin Kelley and Norma Mead Kelley; sisters, Norma Bethana Kelley, Billie Kelley Jenkins and Irvita Kelley Moffat; brother, John Arthur Kelley, Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Mack Shelton; daughter, Paige (Scott) Shappley of Brandon, MS and their daughters, Emma and Sophie; son, Jeff (Tammy) Shelton of Decatur, MS and their sons, Lance (Heather) and Aden; brothers-in-law, Marion Jenkins and Curtis Moffat; sister-in-law, Patricia Dean Kelley; nieces and nephews, Vivian Jenkins Watson, Pam Kelley, Kelley Walker Lightsey, John Kelley, Jr., Kim Walker Brashier, Dia Jenkins Welch, Bill Walker, Merrie Jenkins Smith, Melissa Kelley Stremmel and Deborah Jenkins Purvis; and many beloved cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209, on June 25, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 3:00 pm. Final resting place will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson.
