George had an unmatched gift for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ everywhere he went. He had such compassion for people, and he wanted everyone to know that Jesus loves them. He especially had compassion for the down and out men on the street. He would put his arm around them and tell them the way to know Jesus Christ, personally. He served as Director of Gateway Rescue Mission in Jackson for 30 + years and served as interim pastor at numerous churches. He went to Alaska for two years where he worked with SEND International Mission Board. He also pastored Crystal Springs Baptist Church, until he retired on his 80th birthday.
George is survived by his wife, Jean Griffin Roberson; sons, George H. (Gina) Roberson, of Humble, TX, and Terry (Joni) Griffin; daughters, Rebecca R Poole, Connie (Danny) Richardson, and Denise (Charlie) Davis, all of Terry, MS, and Mike and Carmen Case of Clinton, MS. George was preceded in death by his late wife, Thelma Roberson; sons, Robbie Joe Roberson and Mervin Ray Roberson.
George and Jean have 9 grandchildren, plus, one that is in heaven; many great-grandchildren, plus, one that is in heaven; and a few great-great grands; all of which will miss Pop greatly. There are also many, many close friends and family members who will miss George and his ministry.
George was born and raised in Prentiss, MS. His parents were the late George H. and Rhea Roberson. George lost his dad to cancer when he was four years old, which left his mom to manage a farm and raise him and three older sisters: Beatrice Henderson, 97, of Pearl, MS, the late Minnie Mae McLendon and Ruby Wigington.
George liked nothing more than sitting around the dining table teaching his family and friends about the Bible. He taught us all how to rightly divide the Word, and how to study the Bible with real meaning. We will forever be grateful for his time and his love as he taught us. He lived his life pleasing to the Father.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gateway Rescue Mission at 328 S Gallatin St, Jackson, MS 39203.
