Mr. Jacky Dean Burney, 85, passed away unexpectedly on December 13, 2024. Jacky was born on September 8, 1939, in Jackson, MS to Benjamin H. and Rosemary Curlee Burney. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ben Burney, and Edward Burney; sister Betty Jane Burney Clark; sister-in-law Gladys Burney; brothers-in-law George Croy, Phillip Clark, and Calvin Phelps; nephews Paul Brendon Burney and Billy Phelps. Sister-in-law Patsy Burney passed away on January 12, 2025.
Jacky is survived by his loving wife Shirley Barnes Burney and son Rocky, brothers Donald Burney, Ronald Burney (June), Paul Burney and Dr. William (Billy) Burney (Billie); and sisters Mary Katherine Burney Phelps, Geraldine Burney Croy, Carolyn Burney Cook (Lucius) and Peggy Burney.
Mr. Burney was a graduate of Pearl High School and Mississippi College. After college, Jacky served in the Army for two years. Jacky & Shirley were married for 54 years. Jacky worked at Townsend Paper Company for several years. In 1975, he co-founded Arrow Paper in Jackson, MS. He retired in 2000 and enjoyed many outdoor activities, including spending time with his two hound dogs at the camp, deer and coon hunting. He was a strong supporter of the Ole Miss Rebels and enjoyed gospel quartet music.
Jacky was a long-time member of Wildwood Baptist Church where he served as a greeter and in other capacities. His cheerful smile & firm handshake let you know you were welcome. He never met a stranger.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Phelps, Benji Phelps, Walker Phelps, Will Burney, Steve Lavinghouze and Johnathan Phelps. Honorary pallbearer will be Jimmy Payne.
A celebration of life will be Friday, January 24, 2025, at Wildwood Baptist Church, 101 Auburn Drive, Clinton, MS. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm with funeral following at 2PM.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gideons or charity of your choice.
