
He graduated from Benedictine Military High School in Savannah, GA. He was in the Army for several years and then went to work for Walker Electric in Atlanta. While working for them, he graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in industrial engineering though he worked most of his life in electrical engineering. Harty was working for Walker Electric when he and Frank Meacham, a co-worker, designed an electric panel for Lincoln Center in New York which became a new standard. He worked for many years for Eaton and said he missed many bullets when the company he worked for was bought up and he kept on working for the new company. He retired in 1995 and continued to work for 5 years part-time for various companies the last of which was Groen-Unified Brands.
He loved life and all of his family and friends who loved his sense of humor and outlook on life. He was a good friend to many and a beloved father and husband. He had a roving mind, a deep curiosity and was a student of many subjects. He was a long time member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah, GA.
He was survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty and his two children – son Shawn Harty Keating (Nancy) and his children, Jonathan and Colleen; and daughter Amber Keating Zielinski (Robert) and her children – Benton and Cameron. All of whom were most fortunate to have such a loving Grandfather. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Keating Floyd and Marcella Keating Grossack and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Marcella Harty and James Michael Keating and two brothers, James Pinckney Keating and William Barry Keating.
Arrangements are being made through Wright and Ferguson funeral home, and a memorial service will be held at Briarwood Presbyterian Church on Briarwood Dr, on Tuesday, Dec 27 at 10:30 am, with visitation from 9:30-10:30 am. Memorials may be to the Flowood or Reservoir Libraries of which he was a frequent patron.
